The Danish University Extension in Aarhus (in Danish: "Folkeuniversitetet i Århus") is a dynamic, independent institution affiliated with Aarhus University. The mission of the Danish University Extension is to disseminate research achievements and methods to the general public in an easily understandable way. The Danish University Extension in Aarhus hires researchers and university lecturers from Aarhus University as well as from other Danish research institutions for the courses, and a number of free-lance teachers are hired additionally.
Each year the Danish University Extension in Aarhus sets up, manages, and runs some 600 non-credit courses and lectures, convenes seminars and arranges field trips and study tours covering a wide range of fields covering Theology, History of Culture and History of Ideas; Architecture, Design and Art; Film, Literature and Music; History and Archeology; Science, Political science; Languages and Culture; Management and Communication; Health Science, Psychology and Pedagogies.
Annually 30,000 participants attend our courses in Aarhus and additionally we provide lectures in provincial towns (such as Herning) as well as in the capital city (at the Aarhus University campus, Copenhagen) for another 7,000 participants. The aim is not to provide formal qualifications but solely to meet the participant’s private, individual desire for knowledge and insight. Even so, a number of participants find that the courses tend to widen their perspectives in connection with their work as well. The courses are open to everyone. Nearly all vocational and educational backgrounds are represented among the attendees.
